Thanksgiving Turkey Spoon Craft

2 11 2010

This cute turkey craft is a good project for kids, and it uses up leftover plastic spoons.

There was no tomfoolery here. This youngster followed in her mother’s footsteps to design a pleasing project. “Mom was making crafts for a fund-raiser at my school, and I wanted to do something, too,” explains April L. of Detroit, Michigan.

To April, a bird in the hand was a fun choice. “I decided to make a turkey out of a spoon, because I’d never seen one decorated for Thanksgiving before,” she says. “I thought foam feathers would be pretty to use. My family and friends also liked it.”

Ready to dress up a project of your own? Just ask a parent for the materials and any help you need, then follow the simple instructions here.

You Will Need
Patterns (below)
Tracing paper
White plastic spoon
Scraps of craft foam in five colors, including red (April used Foamies)
Two 10 millimeter wiggle eyes
Scrap of gold felt
Low-temperature glue gun and glue sticks
6-inch-long stick of hard candy or small sucker
Transparent tape

Diary of a Wimpy kid – Movie reviews by Kate

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID chronicles the adventures of wisecracking pre-teen Greg Heffley, who must somehow survive the scariest time of anyone’s life….middle school.

To Greg Heffley, middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. It’s a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are morons, wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment to the cafeteria floor – and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties. To survive the never-ending ordeal and attain the recognition and status he feels he so richly deserves, Greg devises an endless series of can’t-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry. And he’s getting it all down on paper, via a diary – “it’s NOT a diary, it’s a journal!” Greg insists, preferring the less-sissyfied designation – filled with his opinions, thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would-be) schoolyard triumphs. “One day when I’m famous,” writes Greg, “I’ll have better things to do than answer peoples’ stupid questions all day.” So was born the Wimpy Kid’s diary. –© Fox

Starring: Zachary Gordon, Steve Zahn, Devon Bostick, Chloe Grace Moretz

Director: Thor Freudenthal

4 Ways to De-Fat Your Cat

22 08 2010

If your cat’s packing on the pounds, here’s what you can do to help.

If your dog starts packing on the pounds, you take him for walks to get him moving. With cats, it’s more difficult. Today’s felines lead an inactive lifestyle, says veterinarian James Richards, director of the Feline Health Center at Cornell University. “More and more cats are living indoors, so they’re not out running around burning off calories.”

If you can feel your cat’s ribs with your fingers and see his waistline, he’s probably healthy. If not, help your kitty drop some weight:

  • Get him to play. Invest in some interactive toys such as a fishing-pole line for him to chase.
  • Watch portions. Keep her food out of reach when you’re not home. Cats should be fed mornings and evenings — don’t let them graze all day.

How to Check for Identity Theft

24 07 2010

Check for Identity Theft

Being a victim of identity theft can be emotionally and financially draining. Prevention is the key to avoiding the hassles that identity theft can bring to your life. You also need to check your financial situation on a regular basis to see if you have been a victim.

Step 1: Check your bill statements. Whether you receive your bills electronically or by snail mail, be sure to carefully check your bill statements every month. If you see any activity on your accounts that does not belong to you, contact the bill company immediately. If you have been a victim of identity theft, you may receive bills from companies you don’t even have an account with. Again, contact these companies immediately to report that the account is not valid and does not belong to you.

Step 2: Check your bank statements. Thieves tend to be sneaky and come up with unique ways to steal your money. Whether it is stealing one of your bank checks or using your debit card number to make purchases, you need to look for unauthorized transactions on your bank statements each month also.
